Washing the Hands

Step 2: Washing the Hands | Wudu Guide for New Muslims

Step 2: Washing the Hands (Three Times)

After making the intention (niyyah) and saying Bismillah, the first physical act of wudu is to wash the hands. This is done three times, starting with the right hand, and ensuring that water reaches all parts of the hand, including between the fingers.

The purpose of washing the hands first is to prepare the believer’s limbs for the rest of the purification. The hands are the primary tools of action, and beginning with them symbolizes starting with what is most active and visible.

Washing hands in wudu

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  • Begin by washing the **right hand** from fingertips to wrist, making sure water reaches between the fingers.
  • Repeat the washing **three times** as prescribed in the Sunnah.
  • Wash the **left hand** from fingertips to wrist, also three times, ensuring thorough coverage.
  • Ensure the act is deliberate, gentle, and mindful, reflecting obedience and awareness of Allah.

Evidence from the Sunnah:

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:

“When one of you performs wudu, he should start with his hands.”

(Sahih Muslim)

The Salaf-us-Saliheen emphasized care and completeness in washing the hands. It is not sufficient to simply wet them; water must reach all areas, including the spaces between fingers. This reflects sincerity and exactness in obedience.

For new Muslims, washing the hands is more than a physical act. It is the first step in connecting the body and the heart to purification. By performing it with mindfulness and care, the believer sets the tone for the rest of wudu and enters prayer with clarity and readiness.
