Understanding Niyyah (Intention)
In Islam, every act of worship begins with niyyah, or intention. The word “niyyah” comes from the Arabic root ن-و-ي (n-w-y), which relates to the heart and the inward resolve to do something sincerely for Allah. It is the foundation of all acts of obedience, including wudu.
Before performing wudu, a believer should make the intention in the heart to purify oneself for the sake of Allah, preparing to stand in prayer or perform any act of worship. This internal resolve is what distinguishes a mere physical act from an act of worship.
The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
إِنَّمَا الأَعْمَالُ بِالنِّيَّاتِ وَإِنَّمَا لِكُلِّ امْرِئٍ مَا نَوَى
Innama al-a’malu bin-niyyati wa innama likulli imri’in ma nawa
“Actions are only by intentions, and every person will have only what they intended.”
The Salaf-us-Saliheen understood niyyah as the starting point of sincerity. They emphasized that even if the physical acts of wudu are done perfectly, they are not rewarded unless accompanied by the correct intention. The heart must acknowledge the purpose: purification to worship Allah.
For new Muslims, it is important to know that niyyah is internal and does not need to be spoken aloud. Simply resolving in your heart that you are performing wudu for prayer is sufficient and fulfills the Sunnah.
Understanding and practicing niyyah brings meaning to every act of worship. It turns a simple washing of the hands, face, and feet into a spiritual preparation to stand before Allah, reflecting obedience, humility, and awareness.
