How to Perform Wudu
Purification before prayer
Step 8: Washing the Feet to the Ankles
The final step of wudu is washing the feet. This step is clearly commanded by Allah in the Qur’an and was emphasized strongly by the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) due to its importance and the ease with which it may be neglected.
Allah says in the Qur’an:
وَأَرْجُلَكُمْ إِلَى ٱلْكَعْبَيْنِ
Wa arjulakum ila alkabayn
And wash your feet up to the ankles.
The phrase up to the ankles includes the ankles themselves. This was the clear understanding of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) and the early scholars.
How This Step Is Performed
1. Begin with the right foot.
2. Wash the foot from the toes up to and including the ankles.
3. Ensure water reaches between the toes.
4. Wash the foot three complete times.
5. Repeat the same steps with the left foot.
Strong Warning from the Sunnah
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) warned sternly against neglecting any part of the feet during wudu. This warning highlights the seriousness of completing this step correctly.
Narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him):
وَيْلٌ لِلْأَعْقَابِ مِنَ النَّارِ
Waylun lil aaqabi min an-nar
Woe to the heels from the Fire.
Understanding This Step According to the Salaf-us-Saliheen
The Salaf emphasized careful washing of the feet, especially the heels and ankles, because these areas are easily missed. They taught that this warning applies to all neglected parts of wudu.
At the same time, they warned against excess. Water should be used sufficiently, not wastefully, and the act should be done with attentiveness and humility.
A Gentle Completion of Wudu
When you finish washing your feet, your wudu is complete. You have followed the method taught by the Prophet (peace be upon him) and preserved by his Companions and the early generations.
If you make a mistake while learning, correct it calmly next time. Every sincere wudu erases sins and raises ranks. This simple act prepares you to stand before Allah with cleanliness, obedience, and hope.
