How to Perform Wudu
Purification before prayer
The Supplication After Wudu
After completing wudu, the Sunnah teaches us to remember Allah with a short but powerful supplication. This remembrance connects the outward purification of the body with the inward affirmation of faith.
The Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) learned this supplication directly from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and preserved it carefully for the Ummah.
Supplication Taught by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) as narrated from Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him):
أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ
Ashhadu an la ilaha illa Allah wahdahu la sharika lah wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan abduhu wa rasuluh
I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah alone, with no partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and His Messenger.
The Great Reward Mentioned in the Sunnah
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) explained the immense reward attached to this supplication.
Supplication Taught by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) as narrated from Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him):
فُتِحَتْ لَهُ أَبْوَابُ الْجَنَّةِ الثَّمَانِيَةُ يَدْخُلُ مِنْ أَيِّهَا شَاءَ
Futihat lahu abwabul jannati aththamaniyah yadkhulu min ayyiha shaa
The eight gates of Paradise are opened for him, and he may enter through whichever he wishes.
Understanding This Supplication Through the Salaf-us-Saliheen
The early generations of Islam understood this supplication as a renewal of tawhid after purification. Just as wudu removes physical impurities, this testimony affirms spiritual clarity and sincerity.
They recited it calmly after wudu without raising the voice or adding unreported phrases. Their concern was adherence to the Sunnah, not embellishment.
A Gentle Encouragement for the New Muslim
If you forget this supplication, your wudu is still valid. This remembrance is a gift, not a burden. Learn it gradually, recite it with presence of heart, and know that Allah rewards even small acts done with sincerity.
With wudu completed and remembrance uttered, you are ready to stand before Allah in prayer with cleanliness, humility, and hope.
