Harakats Used in This Lesson
Before we begin the letters, let’s learn the basic harakats (vowel marks) that appear in our words. Harakats show how a letter is pronounced.
َ
Fatha
A short “a” sound, as in “bat”
ِ
Kasra
A short “i” sound, as in “sit”
ُ
Damma
A short “u” sound, as in “put”
ْ
Sukoon
No vowel; the letter is silent or ends a syllable
Letters: بَ (ba), تَ (ta), ثَ (tha)
