Introduction to the Arabic Alphabet
New Muslim Academy – (NMA)
Lesson Overview
The Arabic language holds a distinguished place in Islam, as it is the language chosen by Allah for the revelation of the Qur’an. For every Muslim seeking a deeper connection with the Book of Allah, learning the Arabic alphabet is the essential first step. Through it, the learner gains the ability to recognize, pronounce, and eventually recite the words of revelation with correctness and confidence.
This self study lesson is designed for learners who are studying independently and at their own pace. It assumes no prior knowledge of Arabic and begins with the very foundations. The Arabic alphabet consists of twenty eight letters, each with a distinct sound and shape. Arabic is read from right to left, and letters may change form depending on their position within a word.
Purpose of This Lesson
For the Muslim learner, studying the Arabic alphabet is not merely a linguistic exercise. When approached with sincere intention, it becomes an act of worship. Correct pronunciation preserves the meanings of the Qur’an and protects the recitation from error. The scholars of Islam emphasized beginning with strong fundamentals, as precision at the start safeguards future learning.
What You Will Learn
- The names and shapes of the Arabic letters
- Correct pronunciation based on classical articulation points
- Recognition of letters in their isolated forms
- Confidence before progressing to letter combinations
Study Guidance for Self Learners
Learners are encouraged to proceed slowly and deliberately. Each letter should be pronounced aloud and reviewed repeatedly. Accuracy is more important than speed. Where audio examples are provided, they should be used consistently to reinforce correct pronunciation. Whenever possible, learners should later seek correction from a qualified teacher, as oral transmission has always been central to the preservation of Qur’anic recitation.
