Learning Qur’an Arabic for Beginners

Beginning the Journey of Learning Qur’an Arabic

Learning the language of the Qur’an is not merely academic study. It is an act of devotion, patience, and humility before the Speech of Allah.

Learning the Arabic of the Qur’an is one of the most noble journeys a believer can undertake. It is not merely the study of a language, but an entry into the very words through which Allah addressed mankind. For the beginner, this path must be approached with patience, humility, and correct intention.

The Qur’an was revealed in clear Arabic so that hearts may understand, reflect, and submit. Learning its language allows the believer to move from reliance on translation alone toward direct engagement with the Book of Allah, even if gradually and step by step.

This reader is designed for beginners. It assumes no prior knowledge of Arabic and places emphasis on clarity, consistency, and reverence. Progress is made slowly, beginning with recognition and pronunciation, supported by transliteration and meaning, until familiarity grows and reliance on aids naturally decreases.

Before engaging with the Qur’an, it is from proper manners to seek Allah’s assistance, to purify one’s intention, and to ask for beneficial knowledge and understanding.

Supplication Before Seeking Knowledge

رَبِّ زِدْنِي عِلْمًا
Rabbi zidni ilma
My Lord, increase me in knowledge.

Supplication for Ease and Understanding

رَبِّ اشْرَحْ لِي صَدْرِي ۝ وَيَسِّرْ لِي أَمْرِي
Rabbi ishrah li sadri, wa yassir li amri
My Lord, expand my chest for me, and make my task easy for me.

Supplication Before Reading the Qur’an

اللَّهُمَّ افْتَحْ لِي أَبْوَابَ رَحْمَتِكَ
Allahumma iftah li abwaba rahmatik
O Allah, open for me the doors of Your mercy.

Supplication for Beneficial Knowledge

اللَّهُمَّ انْفَعْنِي بِمَا عَلَّمْتَنِي وَعَلِّمْنِي مَا يَنْفَعُنِي
Allahumma infani bima allamtani, wa allimni ma yanfauni
O Allah, benefit me with what You have taught me, and teach me that which will benefit me.

With these supplications, the learner begins not with confidence in their own ability, but with reliance upon Allah. Consistency, sincerity, and patience are more important than speed. Every letter learned is a step closer to understanding the Book of Allah.
