Key Concepts and Terminology

Allah (الله)

The Arabic word for the One True God, the same God worshiped by all prophets from Adam to Muhammad ﷺ. The term has no plural or gender form, emphasizing divine uniqueness and unity.

Tawheed (توحيد)

The foundational doctrine of Islam meaning Oneness of God: Allah is alone in His Lordship, His Names and Attributes, and His exclusive right to be worshiped without partners or intermediaries.

Qur’an (القرآن)

The final, preserved revelation from Allah, sent to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ over 23 years. It confirms earlier revelation, corrects human distortions, and completes divine guidance for all mankind.

Sunnah (سنة)

The teachings, sayings, approvals, and actions of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. The Sunnah explains and demonstrates the Qur’an and is the second source of Islamic guidance.

Nubuwwah (النبوة)

Prophethood; the divine office through which Allah chose messengers to convey His guidance. All prophets called to Tawheed and righteous living, culminating with Muhammad ﷺ as the final messenger.

Wahy (وحي)

Revelation or divine communication. In Islam, wahy refers to how Allah informed His prophets of His commands. The Qur’an is the final and fully preserved wahy.

Tafsir (تفسير)

The science and method of explaining the meanings of the Qur’an. Classical tafsir works such as those of Ibn Kathir, Al Qurtubi, and As Sadi Rahimahumullah clarify context, language, and rulings.

Shirk (شرك)

The act of associating anything or anyone with Allah in worship, lordship, or attributes. It is the gravest sin and the opposite of Tawheed, condemned by all prophets.

Tawbah (توبة)

Sincere repentance to Allah: leaving the sin, regretting it, seeking forgiveness, and resolving not to return to it. Allah accepts the repentance of His servants who return to Him.

Akhirah (الآخرة)

The Hereafter: resurrection, judgment, Paradise, and Hell. Belief in the Akhirah is central to accountability and moral responsibility in Islam.

Salaf us Saliheen (السلف الصالحين)

The righteous earliest generations of Muslims: the companions of the Prophet ﷺ, their students, and the generation after them. Their understanding is the purest and most authentic.

Zakah (زكاة)

Obligatory charity and one of the five pillars of Islam. It purifies wealth, supports the needy, and strengthens social justice in the Muslim community.

Shaytan (شيطان)

Satan: the rebellious jinn who disobeyed Allah and swore to mislead mankind from Tawheed. Believers are commanded to seek refuge in Allah from his whispers.

Dawah (دعوة)

Inviting to Allah with wisdom, clarity, and good instruction. Dawah is the continuation of the work of the prophets and must be done with knowledge and mercy.

“Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good instruction, and argue with them in the way that is best.” (Qur’an 16:125)
