The Heart That Remembers Allah

Jumu’ah reflection for believers seeking to renew their hearts.

الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَتَطْمَئِنُّ قُلُوبُهُم بِذِكْرِ اللَّهِ أَلَا بِذِكْرِ اللَّهِ تَطْمَئِنُّ الْقُلُوبُ

Translation (The Clear Qur’an): Those who believe, and whose hearts find comfort in the remembrance of Allah. Surely in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find comfort.

(Surah Ar Rad, 13:28)

1. The essence of tranquility

The people of knowledge from the early generations explained that the heart cannot be at rest unless it is connected to Allah. Remembrance is not only a phrase on the tongue. It is an awakening of the heart. Ibn al Qayyim رحمه الله said that when the heart is filled with dhikr it becomes illuminated, and when it is empty of it, it becomes dark and unsettled.

Al Hasan al Basri رحمه الله said:

Seek your sweetness in three things in the prayer, in the remembrance of Allah, and in the recitation of the Qur’an. If you do not find it there, then know that the door to your heart is closed.

Jumu’ah is a day that revives that sweetness. It is a weekly station of purification.

2. Qur’an and Sunnah on dhikr

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

The example of the one who remembers his Lord and the one who does not is like that of the living and the dead.

(Reported by Al Bukhari and Muslim)

Ibn Taymiyyah رحمه الله said that dhikr to the heart is like water to the fish. If you take the fish out of the water it dies. So when the heart is far from dhikr it becomes dry and lifeless.

This is why the Salaf made remembrance their provision. They did not restrict it to the Masjid. They remembered Allah in their buying and selling, in their journeys, in the night, in the early morning, and before sleep.

3. Jumu’ah a gathering of bodies and hearts

It is said that it is called Jumu’ah because it gathers the Muslims together. But it also gathers their hearts on one goal obedience to Allah. Ibn Kathir رحمه الله mentioned that this day was given to this ummah as a weekly eid to wash away the sins of the week.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

Whoever bathes on Friday, purifies himself, goes early, listens attentively, and does not engage in idle speech, his sins between that Friday and the next will be forgiven.

(Muslim 857)

So the day is not only a duty. It is a renewal of the covenant between the servant and his Lord.

4. A question for the believer

Every believer must ask Am I living with a heart that remembers Allah or a heart that is distracted by the world

وَمَن أَعْرَضَ عَن ذِكْرِي فَإِنَّ لَهُ مَعِيشَةً ضَنكًا

Translation: And whoever turns away from My remembrance will certainly have a miserable life.

(Surah Ta Ha, 20:124)

This is a clear warning. Hardness of the heart, anxiety, loss of focus, and lack of barakah are often the result of turning away from the remembrance of Allah.

5. Practical Jumu’ah actions

Let this blessed day be a day of practical worship. Among the most beneficial actions today:

  • Recite Surah Al Kahf with reflection.
  • Send abundant salawaat upon the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ throughout the day.
  • Make special du’a in the last hour before Maghrib. This is a time that is not rejected.
  • Review your week and renew your intention for obedience.

6. A du’a for the heart

اللهم اجعل قلوبنا بذكرك مطمئنة واجعل ألسنتنا بذكرك رطبة واجعل نفوسنا لطاعتك منيبة يا رب العالمين.

O Allah make our hearts tranquil with Your remembrance make our tongues moist with Your praise and make our souls returning to Your obedience.
