The Virtues Of Sending Salawat Upon The Beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ – Dr. Abdul Wahid Yusuf

Alhamdulillah — all praise belongs to Allah, the Lord of the worlds. We bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah. We also bear witness that Muhammad ﷺ is His final Messenger and servant. Among the greatest acts of worship and remembrance is sending salawat (peace and blessings) upon the Prophet ﷺ. This practice connects the heart of the believer with his Prophet ﷺ. This noble act is not a mere ritual. It is a command from Allah. It is a source of endless blessings. It is a means of purifying hearts. For those who are new to Islam, understanding this act is especially vital. It strengthens love for the Messenger ﷺ. It deepens faith. It draws the believer closer to Allah’s mercy.

The Qur’anic Command

In Surah al-Ahzab – Qur’an chapter 33:56, Allah, the Exalted and Majestic, says:

“Indeed, Allah showers His blessings upon the Prophet, and His angels pray for him. O you who believe! Send blessings upon him and greet him with peace.”

The Meaning of Salawat upon the Prophet ﷺ.

  • From Allah: Mercy, honor, and raising of rank.
  • From the Angels: Supplication for forgiveness and mercy.
  • From the Believers: Prayer for Allah to elevate him, grant him peace, and increase his honor.

Abu al-‘Aliyah (rahimahullah) explained: “Allah’s salawat upon the Prophet ﷺ is His praising him among the angels. The angels’ salawat is their supplication for him.”
